In this tutorial we will learn how to install SQL Server 2008 for our vSphere Lab. Many a times we will encounter the situation in our vSphere environment where we cant go with the installation of bundled SQL Express editions due to the limit imposed by this free edition. In that case we need to setup a separate database server where we can create database for our vCenter Server of can configure database instance for View Horizon.

When you have ensured that your system meets all the hardware and software requirements, then its time to jump onto installation. Follow the steps shown below to install SQL Server 2008 R2 :
1: Navigate to directory where you have downloaded the installation files and Run the setup file.
2: Since this is a brand new install, choose “New Installation or add features to an existing installation”
A command prompt window will flash and Setup Rules dialog box will show up.
3: Make sure that all Setup Rules are passed. If there are failed rules, you won’t be able to proceed. In case of warnings, you can continue to install, but you still should note the warning and take corrective measures, before or after installation. Click on ok.
4: Type your product key and click on next
5: Go through the License Terms and if you are agrees upon the terms, then check on “I accept the license terms”. And then click on the “Next”.
6: Click on the “Install”.
7: Make sure that all Setup Rules are passed. If there are failed rules, you won’t be able to proceed. In case of warnings, you can continue to install, but you still should note the warning and take corrective measures, before or after installation.Click on Next button to proceed it further.
8: On Next screen select All features with default.
Under the Feature Selection, it’s on you what the feature you want to work with. You have the option to either Select All or multiple options can be selected. If you want to feature all of these features, then click on Select All. After this click on next
9: Select Default instance and click on next
10: Your system should surpass the requirements of space required by the installation process. Click on Next.
11: Sever Configuration page shows up the service accounts and collation configuration. In account name select NT Authority\system for all except SQL server integration service. For this select NT Authority\Network service.
12: On next screen, under account provisioning select mixed mode and set password for SA. After this click on add current user. You can add more user by clicking on add button.
13: On next screen select install the native mode default configuration and click on next.
14: On next screen leave both the check boxes unticked and Click on next.
15: click on next if all tests are passed
17: click on install button.
18: Installation will be started after clicking install. Now its time to sit and relax for a bit because installation takes some time.
19: With this our installation has finished.
